Lesbian empowerment night to be Sunday

Sappho, a local lesbian support group, will hold its second annual women’s empowerment night on Sunday at Rocky’s Pizza in Smithfield.

The event will feature scheduled poetry readings and music performances. The public is welcome to attend. The show will open at 7 p.m. Participants are encouraged to sign up ahead of time. Refreshments will be served. The entry fee is $5. For more information, please contact Jill at

Storyteller to make stop at Logan theater

Nationally recognized storyteller Diane Ferlatte will share her talents as the featured storyteller for a language arts event called “A Festival of Words” at the Caine Lyric Theatre in Logan on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Ferlatte’s visit coincides with National Black History Month. As an African American performer, many of her stories come from her background in the South and her heritage in Africa. All of her performances are accessible and engaging to both adults and children of any culture, Ho Williams, president of the Cache Valley Storytelling Guild.

Ferlatte will be accompanied in the festival by David Bullock and Erik Pearson. Tickets will be sold at Chapter Two Books.

In her performances, Ferlatte sings, signs (American Sign Language), uses percussive instruments and will be accompanied by Pearson on banjo and guitar. With hundreds of stories and songs, she tells folktales, fables legends, historical, contemporary and personal stories.

Ferlatte has performed across the United States and overseas.

Prior to her final performance at the Caine Lyric Theatre, Ferlatte will perform before 2,300 Cache Valley elementary students.

Top execs come for USU business seminar

Utah State University’s annual Partners in Business marketing seminar on Wdnesday and Thursday will bring America’s leading marketing executives to campus. They will address innovative ways to retain existing customers, obtain new customers and improve customer satisfaction.

A. Scott Anderson, president and CEO of Zion’s Bank, presides over Utah’s largest financial institution with 26 full-service branches throughout the state. He will discuss the importance of focusing organization’s marketing energies on retaining existing clients.

Marie Bonham, seminar coordinator, said, Anderson has more than 30 years of expertise in this field. He is known as a stimulating speaker with extensive knowledge and experience in the financial services industry. During his presentation, he will explain why establishing long-term clients is a key component to profitability within a company.

College gives natural resources awards

The College of Natural Resources at Utah State University awarded two professional achievement awards this month.

Dean Fee Busby, said, “Douglas Johnson was recognized for oustanding accomplishments in the management of our natural resources.”

Gregory Bevenger was recognized for his professional achievements and his dedicated stewardship of watershed lands.
