Director named at museum of art

The College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Utah State University has announced the appointment of Victoria Rowe as director of the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art.

The announcement was made by the college’s interim dean, Gary Kiger.

Rowe has been the museum’s interim director since September 2002. She previously served as the museum’s Education curator, joining the staff in January 2002.

“We have every confidence that Victoria Rowe will provide strong leadership to the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art,” Kiger said, when making the appointment.

Rowe received her master’s degree in studio art in 1991 and her bachelor’s degree in art education in 1978, both from USU. She is a professional member of the National Art Education Association, Utah Art Education Association, Utah Museum Association, Western Museum Association and the College Art Association.

As the museum’s director, Rowe said she looks forward to building and diversifying the museum’s audience, developing and enhancing the collection, participating in the advancement of the School of Arts and creating many collaborative opportunities with the university and the community.

Students honored by engineering

Utah State University’s College of Engineering honored its outstanding seniors, faculty distinguished alumni and distinguished service recipients at the college’s annual awards banquet held during National Engineering Week, Feb. 17 to 21.

Five students were recognized as outstanding seniors by their respective departments. Christopher B. Fox of River Heights was honored by the biological and irrigation engineering department.

The civil and environmental engineering department named Eric C. Olsen of Vernal outstanding senior.

Robert L. Blaser of Rexburg, Idaho, was honored as outstanding senior in the electrical and computer engineering department.

Logan C. Phipps of Farmington is the outstanding senior in industrial technology and education.

The mechanical and aerospace engineering department named Spencer R. Fugal of Lindon its outstanding senior.

Professor Carl G. Wood from mechanical and aerospace engineering received the outstanding adviser award.

Guest lectures at USU on Friday

Del Ratsch, professor of philosophy at Calvin College, will present a guest lecture at Utah State University on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Old Main, Room 225 on the relation between Christian creationism and science.

The lecture is sponsored by the department of languages and philosophy at USU. The title of Ratsch’s lecture is “Did God (or someone) Design It All? What Science is Permitted to Think About.” The lecture is free and open to the public.

Ratsch’s lecture is supported by a grant from the Center for Theology and Natural Science, interim department head Charlie Huenemann said.

“We invite members of the campus and Cache Valley community to attend,” he said.

Ratsch is the author of several books on the relation between Christian creationism and science, Huenemann said.
