Professor speaking on genes, God

The Utah State University Department of Languages and Philosophy presents Colorado State University professor Homes Rolston III speaking on “Genes, Genesis and God,” Friday, April 4.

The “distinguished professor of philosophy” will be speaking in Old Main, Room 225. Admission is free.

Gardner Village conducts contest

The First Annual Gardner Village Amateur Photography Contest will be held March 1 through May 2. Amateur photographers ages 12 and older are invited to participate.

All photos must be taken on-site at Gardner Village and reflect one of six categories: history, buildings, people, nature, digital and 12-to 18-year old division. Entry is free.

USU featured in TV commercial

Utah State University was given a chance to be seen in the television spotlight with a 30-second commercial narrated by President Kermit Hall during the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

The commercial, produced by the Office of Public Relations and Marketing and University media Production, highlights the Utah State Wright Flyer project, showing footage of its first test flights on the Salt Flats.

It also features the Space Dynamics Laboratory and its cutting-edge research for NASA.

The commercial was also scheduled to air three times during the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, March 27-28, and aired during KUTV’s 10 p.m. news broadcasts March 24 and 25.

Benefit car wash to be held Saturday

A benefit carwash to support U.S. troops will be held Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Lee’s Marketplace in Smithfield, Wal-Mart and Crystal Inn.

Volunteers to help wash cars are needed. Anyone who would like to help wash cars should meet at the Romney Stadium parking lot at 9:30 a.m.

All money raised will go to make care packages for U.S. troops fighting in the war in Iraq.

Chemistry seminar to be held Wed.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Utah State University is pleased to announce the inaugural R. Gaurth Hansen Seminar on Wednesday, April 9 at 4 p.m. in the Eccles Science Learning Center’s Emert Auditorium.

William N. Lipscomb of Harvard University and 1976 Nobel Laureate will speak on “Activity and Regulation in Allosteric Enzymes: Chorismate Mutase as an Example.”

Lipscomb is originally a native of Cleveland. He received his BS in chemistry at the University of Kentucky in 1941. Then he moved on to Caltech where he earned his doctorate in 1946, working with Linus Pauling.

He took his first faculty position at the University of Minnesota, where he remained through 1959, rising through the ranks there to Professor and chief of the physical chemistry division.

In 1959, Lipscomb moved to Harvard University, where he assumed the Abbott and James Lawrence Chair in 1971. He took on Emeritus status in 1990, and remains highly active in research.
