Jazz ensembles to perform

Utah State University’s jazz ensembles will kick off the concert season with an evening of jazz, Oct. 8 in the Kent Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door and admission is $3. USU students with current ID are admitted for free.

The first concert of the year marks an important change in the history of USU jazz in the department of music with the introduction of Jon Gudmundson, director of jazz studies and department’s Jazz Orchestra. Gudmundson replaces Larry Smith, who spent 38 years at the helm of the jazz program at USU.

The concert will feature two jazz groups, the Jazz Ensemble, directed by Todd Fallis and the Jazz Orchestra, directed by Gudmundson. Fallis said he promises his usual array of jazz and comtemporary selections at the concert.

Tenor saxophonist Bob Mintzer’s great tribute to the cha-cha “Acha” will be performed, and a two-trombone feature is in the offering with Roger Karren and Andrew Watkins sharing the spotlight. Gudmundson plans to solo on something himself, as well.
