Annual chili bowl sale held today

The Utah State University Ceramics Guild is preparing for one of the year’s most popular fundraising events on campus, its annual Chili Bowl Sale.

This year’s sale is slated for Wednesday, outside the Taggart Student Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A handcrafted bowl filled with homemade chili is $7. Both cash and checks are accepted.

The Utah State Ceramics Guild, a group of ceramics majors, graduate students and faculty, get together each fall and throw bowls, which are then filled with chili made by students in the Culinary Arts Club of the department of nutrition and food sciences. The Utah State Ceramics Guild expects to have more than 700 bowls for sale at the event. The bowls are dishwasher and microwave safe and are stoneware clay with high-fire glazes. The bowls are all made and fired in USU’s ceramics studio in the department of art in the weeks preceding the event.

“The annual Chili Bowl Sale is the guild’s biggest fundraiser of the year,” said Steff Holmgren, Utah State Ceramics Guild co-president. “The funds raised from this event enable us to bring many visiting artists to campus and make purchases that keep our studio well equipped.”

The Culinary Arts Club uses its share of the proceeds for educational field trips and opportunities to enhance culinary skills through cook-offs, demonstrations and with guest chef lectures.
