Campus Participation

Dear Editor:

I have been away from USU for a few years now, but I still hold my Alma Mater dear to my heart.

I have been reading the articles in the Online Statesman encouraging students to get to know the campus and Logan, as well as becoming involved in social offerings.

In the midst of this, I would like to remind everyone about the Service Center. While attending USU, I became very involved in the Service Center, serving on the committee for STAR (Students Teaching Arithmetic and Reading).

Since moving on (I did graduate work at the U of U) I have come to appreciate what a rare opportunity USU students have to participate in their community through the Service Center.

Students can volunteer as little as two hours a month or as much as five hours a week. There is a program that will appeal to anyone and meet their schedule. Volunteers can be involved in Special Olympics, STAR, Habitat for Humanity, Alternative Breaks, or any of the 20 programs offered.

When I was a student, I wondered where I would find the time to volunteer. After doing it, I wished I had done it sooner. I was surprised to realize that I never missed the time out of my schedule, even when maintaining a full schedule and working nights.

Check out the website (http://servicecenter.usu.edu) for the service center to decide what you would like to get involved in, then do it. You will never regret it.
