Car accident leaves student in critical condition

Black ice conditions in Logan Canyon led to a vehicle rollover Saturday night involving two Utah State University students.

All three passengers were taken to Logan Regional Hospital, two were released, but one remains in critical condition.

Brandon Rogers, 22, and Jonathon Reams, 20, both of Providence were treated and released Sunday, while the driver, Carlos M. Sanchez, 18, Providence, was life flighted to LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City where he remains in critical condition, said Jeni Owens, LDS Hospital spokeswoman.

Reams was initially registered for the fall semester as a public health major, but withdrew before classes began. Sanchez was a student during the Spring 2001 semester, according to the Registrar’s office records.

The accident occurred just after 10 p.m. on Saturday when according to the Utah Highway Patrol, the vehicle hit some black ice in Logan Canyon, rolled over and coming to rest 100 feet from US 89. At the time of the accident the National Weather Service reported hazy conditions and near-freezing temperatures in Logan.

All three passengers arrived by ambulance at Logan Regional Hospital at 11:32 p.m. Saturday. Because of the severity of Sanchez’s head injuries he was flown to LDS Hospital an hour later, arriving at 1:25 a.m. Sunday.

Listed as critical, Sanchez’s vital signs are unstable and “indications are unfavorable,” said Debbie Lewis, Logan Regional Hospital spokeswoman.
