Carroll honored
Despite not making it to the championship game of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament, Utah State senior guard Jaycee Carroll was named to the All-Tournament Team Saturday night at the conclusion of the championship game between Boise State and New Mexico State.
It is the third time in Carroll’s career he has received all-tournament honors. Carroll also received the honor last year and was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2005 Big West Tournament.
In two games, Carroll averaged 22 points and four rebounds per game. The sharp shooter hit 54.8 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from beyond the 3-point line.
In response to being named to the All-Tournament Team, Carroll was flattered but would have rather won a conference championship, he said.
“That was cool, it was flattering. My wife was still there in Las Cruces, so she called and told me when they announced it. It’s an honor,” Carroll said. “But unfortunately I would have much rather won a championship game and not be named to the all-tournament team instead of the the other way around.”
Boise State’s Reggie Larry was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, while teammates Matt Nelson and Matt Bauscher were named to the all-tournament team as well. New Mexico State’s Justin Hawkins rounded out the team.
When asked about the three Boise State players honored, Carroll had nothing but good things to say.
“I really get along well the Boise state guys. Bauscher is a great guy, and I consider him a friend. Tyler Tiederman (who was not honored) is a class act, Reggie Larry as well. Nelson, after you get through his fireball attitude, was a great guy,” Carroll said. “Boise State was really a class act. It’s good to see great people be successful.”
