Caught on Campus: Random Student Profiles

Utah Statesman: Why did you choose to come to USU?
Brian Watson: I got an academic scholarship; they are friendly and accepting of concurrent enrollment and AP credits.
US: Is there anything you don’t like about USU?
Watson: Nothing huge, there are a lot of good opportunities here.
US: What five words would your parents use to describe you?
Watson: Wow, five words? They’d probably say I was determined, pretty much anything to do with hard-working. They think I’m smart, but that’s because my dad’s an artist. My whole family, they’re all art people, I’m the odd one. Let’s also go with honest and loyal.
US: So how did you end up with three majors dealing with finance when you’re whole family is into the arts?
Watson: I guess I couldn’t compete in the art arena, so I found my niche elsewhere.
US: When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Watson: A pilot
US: Why did that change?
Watson: I was going to go to the Air Force Academy, but then my eyes changed. For what I wanted to do at the time, you had to have 20/20 vision, but now they let you get lasik.
US: Have you ever called in sick to work when you haven’t really been sick?
Watson: Nope, never.
US: Has anyone ever said you look like a celebrity?
Watson: Yes, Topher Grace. My hair is kinda long right now, so people don’t really say that too much when it’s long. Usually it’s short and spiked up, but it’s kinda long and shaggy right now, I need a hair cut.
US: Would you ever shave your head?
Watson: No
US: Why not?
Watson: I figure that if you’ve got hair, it’s professional to have hair.
US: If you could be an animal for one day what animal would you be?
Watson: Anything that could fly.
US: Where would you fly to?
Watson: Somewhere with mountains where it’s warm. I’m not big on California. I like humidity too. Brazil maybe, the rainforest. We’ll say the rainforest.
US: If you were a bird flying through the rainforest, would you look for female birds to hit on?
Watson: Probably not. I wouldn’t avoid them, but I wouldn’t be seeking them out either.
US: If you were famous for one reason, what reason would you want that be?
Watson: Probably having a positive influence on the ethical world of business.
US: What would you do?
Watson: In business, we have a lot of people who make unethical choices, or in government, they don’t really promote ethical behavior in business. Something that would change incentives for people to make ethical decisions in business.
US: What would you suggest they do differently?
Watson: Take a long-term perspective and then do what’s going to do the most good for the most people rather than working to get your bonus this quarter or satisfying the stock holders this quarter. You need to take a long-run approach, that’s what it’s about. If you’re always looking at the short term, you’re not going to get anywhere in the long-term.
US: Do you ever use pick-up lines?
Watson: Not intentionally. I don’t sit around and think of any.
US: What is the first thing you do when you wake up?
Watson: Wish I could stay in bed.
US: Do you use your snooze button a lot?
Watson: This semester, yes. But anytime prior, no.
US: What’s different about this semester?
Watson: Just lots of stress over work and stuff like that.
US: Have you ever read your own horoscope?
Watson: Yeah.
US: Do you believe what they say?
Watson: Not really.
US: Do you have any unusual talents or obscure hobbies?
Watson: I used to be kind of a chess bum, I don’t have any time to play anymore.
US: Would you like to play wizarding chess with Harry Potter?
Watson: Sure.
