Center is necessary as long as hate exists

I am writing this letter in response to anyone who thinks negatively of the new center for gay and lesbian support. I am not responding to any one comment that has been featured in the Statesman, but instead, expressing my concern for our society that seems to have forgotton that people are people. We all have special needs- no matter how stong we are. How many of us have visited a support or guidance office of some kind to meet our needs? What if our specific office would not have been there? Utah State has a very diverse population and has a responsibility to serve all of us. Having a support center for gays and lesbians is no different than having a center for other minorities. Should we do away with the Women’s center or the multicultural student support center? Being a straight, caucasian, female, I probably will not use the multicultural student support center or the gay and lesbian support center, but I don’t mind supporting either for the health of our classmates. For those amongst us who believe that the new center is supporting a group solely for their sexual activities, please remember that sex is no more a part of their lives as it is of ours. The only difference is that they are often riddiculed and sometimes victimized for their choice of partner.
