Civic Awareness Week continues on the TSC Patio
Three times more voter registration forms have been filled out by students during this year’s Civic Awareness Week than last year, said Tagg Archibald, Associated Students of Utah State University executive vice president.
Archibald reported on the success of the week at the ASUSU Executive Council meeting Tuesday evening.
Civic Awareness Week activities will continue throughout the week including more opportunities for students to register to vote, he said.
Activities will include a noon activity Wednesday on the Taggart Student Center patio with music and food as well as activities sponsored by some of Utah State University’s Greek houses.
At 11:30 a.m., on Friday, students will have a chance to watch a mock presidential debate by the USU debate team. Students can also write letters to American troops overseas.
At 12:15 p.m., Republican Congressional candidate Ron Bishop will speak to students on the TSC patio.
ASUSU President Les Essig announced at the meeting that USU students have been invited to attend a state-wide convention at UVSC prior to election day that will feature film director Michael Moore. Essig said the event is scheduled for Oct. 20 and details will be forthcoming.
The athletics department gave permission for 43 stadium parking permits to be set aside for a tail-gate party before this Saturday’s football game, said Jimi Jorgensen, ASUSU athletics vice president.
Jorgensen said they were pleased with the success of last week’s tailgate and were happy to receive permission for a tailgate party this week from Athletics Director Randy Spetman.
However, Jorgensen said, its important as many students as possible show up to this week’s tailgate so the tradition can continue.
Also during the meeting, a committee comprised of several ASUSU executive council members was organized in order to bring together student initiatives and better identify what students want to be done with the tuition increase.
A meeting will be held next Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the TSC where students will be able to voice their opinions about the increase.
