The Utah State University baseball club team finished up its fall season this week winning three of four games against rival Weber State University.

In winning the last three games of the season, USU ended up with an 8-8 record this fall. Head coach Ernie Rivers praised the team’s effort and improvement.

“Things are looking up for us [in the spring], especially after winning only seven games all of last year. We are looking to be very competitive in the spring,” Rivers said.

On Saturday, the Aggies split two games with the Wildcats at Providence Field. After losing the first contest 10-7, USU came back and won the second game 12-3.

Greg Peterson pitched well and picked up the win in a game where every Aggie got at least one hit.

Brett Thompson and Mark Larsen both homered and batted in five and four runs, respectively. Jonathan Swenson also played well, stealing a base and adding a triple and double as the Aggies dominated Weber State.

The team traveled to Serge B. Simmons Field in Ogden on Tuesday to play another doubleheader versus the Wildcats.

Utah State batted just under .500 as they beat up on the WSU team and came away with 8-3 and 18-9 victories.

Joe Macfarland pitched a complete game and got the win in the first game. Mark Larsen continued his hot hitting with a two-run homer and Dave Bartholomew had two hits and an RBI for USU. Derek Giordano was the winning pitcher and Sean Morrissey pitched a couple of solid innings of relief in the second game. Jonathan Swenson also had a huge game for the Aggies, going 6-for-6 with two home runs and a triple, while batting in six runs. Dan Gay drove in another four runs as the Aggies ended their fall season on a strong note.

“We have improved and been consistent all season,” Rivers said. “Now we need to take that momentum into spring ball and do some damage.”
