Club New York brings the party to Logan
Former Club NVO, located at 339 N. Main Street, is under new management and has been re-named Club New York by owner Juan Mariano. However, the name is not the only thing Mariano has changed about the club.
Mariano, a USU business major grad student, said he has worked hard to renovate the club and turn it into a hot spot for young adults.
“We’ve tried to provide better customer service,” Mariano said. “We’ve repainted the halls, remodeled the inside, made it brighter outside and enforced a stricter dress code.”
The new dress code, said Mariano, will ensure that the club’s atmosphere is classy and professional. This means no one wearing hoodies, bandanas or, for guys, tank tops will be let in the front door.
Mariano said he had come to USU to get his MBA when he began working at Club NVO as a DJ. He saw all the potential for the club and said he felt it was underutilized.
“Our plan was to create an atmosphere that’s comfortable, high energy and has different theme-nights,” Mariano said. “When you come into Club New York, you’re in New York City.”
So far, Mariano said students have been pleased with the changes.
“It’s been pretty nice,” Mariano said. “The people who have come so far have commented on the changes and said it has more energy.”
In addition to structural changes both inside and out, Mariano said he has worked hard to make the club a comfortable atmosphere to mingle and meet new people. He has also added theme nights to give each night a distinct flavor.
According to the club’s Web site, www.clubnewyorkut.com, Tuesday is ballroom night, Wednesday is set aside for bands to play, Thursday is currently country night with hip-hop and karaoke in rooms two and three, Friday is ladies night where ladies can get in free before 10 p.m. and Saturday is Latin night.
Mariano said he is trying to incorporate the community into the club by hosting fundraising and charity events to give back to people in need. He is also reaching out to the younger crowd by setting up a high school night for students.
“They are utilizing a lot more nights in the week and giving an opportunity for teens in the valley to get involved,” said Wayne Thompson, a DJ at Club New York.
Thompson, who spins under the name DJ Absolute, said he usually DJs on Thursdays and Fridays and plays mainly top 40, hip-hop, techno and remixes of popular songs. Thompson, sophomore majoring in broadcast journalism, said he got start working for a radio station when he met Mariano and decided to venture into club DJ-ing.
“Juan did mobile DJ-ing and got me into doing the club thing,” Thompson said. “I love being there involved in the environment, getting to see everyone and interacting with the crowd.”
Thompson said his favorite part of DJ-ing at Club New York is just “seeing everyone go crazy”, when he plays remixes. Although Thompson only DJ’s a few nights a week for Club New York, he said he is available anytime anyone wants him to do a party.
“I would love to,” he said.
Since its grand opening, Mariano said the club has made even more changes and is still renovating. Some future projects include getting a sign on main street and planning more events for the club.
