Co-curricular transcripts offered

The co-curricular transcript program is a new program recently started on campus and developed as a way for students to keep record of their involvement at Utah State University outside of the classroom.

Through involvement with this program students can learn many important life skills developed through involvement in activities outside the classroom.

Randy Jensen, assistant for special events and projects for Student Services, said, “The transcript was started so that students could have the opportunity to understand and organize the skills they had developed in doing these activities and to be able to communicate those skills to potential employers.”

According to the Department of Student Services Office of Student Activities Sample Transcript, the benefits of the co-curricular transcript are recognizing skills obtained through involvement, preparing for résumé and job interviewing, targeting skill areas to develop to enhance career and goals, and enhancing future growth and development.

“We know that employers are looking for employees who have good leadership and people skills and we feel that many of these are developed in co-curricular activities,” Jensen said.

The program is open to all USU students and is free of charge.

Ashley Jones, a freshman business administration major, said, “When looking for a job, businesses not only look for your academic standards but what you did in the community while going to school.”

“This program is very user friendly. It is all Web-based and can be found on the Student Activity Web page under the Leadership Exploration Resource Center. Students log in and have their own password. At any time they can go in and change, edit or delete items that they have entered. They can also print out an unofficial transcript,” Jensen said.

Entries can be submitted at any time. However, a more complete and accurate transcript will occur if entries are submitted at the end of the activity. The Student Activities Office will then contact an office representative associated with the submitted activities, according to the sample transcript, and will provide validation.

“When the student wants an official transcript they can request one which can be picked up in Room 326 of the Student Center or it can be mailed to their home or to a prospective employer. The official transcript takes about two weeks to process,” Jensen said.
