COLUMN: College of Family Life gone, but not forgotten

The College of Family Life… what happened?

Though life without family is impossible, life without the College of Family Life will have to do for now.

As most of you know, the U.S. economy, including the state of Utah, is currently experiencing a downfall. Since Utah State University is a state-funded school, we were asked to cut back on our expenses for the next few years.

After much consideration, President hall decided that by “dissolving” the College of Family Life the university would save about $450,000.

The college was selected for several reasons, most of which I, along with several others, am unaware at this point. But I trust the President knows what he’s doing, and I hope we can support his decision.

Though the College of Family Life is gone for now, I hope to continue to stand tall for my beliefs in the family, and plan to be a powerful voice for why the family should always be our number one priority. It does not necessarily take a college name to prove that. I personally believe that much of who we are is simply because of the family.

Several students majoring in the College of Family Life might be confused and afraid they will lose their major, or any part of it. News for all: no major will be affected. All faculty from the college will continue to remain intact.

Plans for an announcement will be made towards the end of September as to which college each major will belong to. For example, Family and Human Development will now be in the College of Education. Others will most likely go to the College of Education, the College of Agriculture, or the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. Whatever college, students can still graduate when originally planned. You are just now going to be answering to someone else.

For questions about the change, feel free to contact me anytime, anyway.
