COLUMN: Don’t drop the ball

The Aggie football team was in Provo last year for the annual fall matchup. I and a few other Aggies went to Edwards Stadium to support our team. We were covered in white and blue, hats on, pom-poms wavin’ and cowbells clamoring. We had tickets far from the action on the field, but we still cheered enthusiastically.

Soon after the kickoff, a few quarters zinged by our heads. Glancing back, we noticed a couple BYU students were the offenders. We still enjoyed the first half, but the hecklers continued with derogatory comments.

After the Aggies recovered their onside kickoff to start the second half, our cowbells fired off with our excitement. Then, one of the Y students asked to see our cowbell. When the bell was extended to him, he grabbed it and hurled it out of the stadium. I asked him to retrieve the bell, but he smirked and refused. So, I told the event staff, and under the pressure of authority he brought the cowbell back, grass clumped on and all.

By the end we found out we played ball against each other in high school.

Afterwards, I chatted with other USU fans and I heard similar stories.

Let’s be honest, it happens here too. We are a first-class institution, so why act contrary, even during a game?

Show respect because we are all human beings, Let’s stand taller and not drop the ball.
