COLUMN: Get involved, play intramurals

Can they set this place up to be any more hectic?

The stress could have started even before the semester when all your classes could’ve been dropped because tuition wasn’t paid in full by Aug. 15.

After paying tuition, you might have printed out your schedule and headed out to the ECLS building, or was it the ECSL? You pull out all the campus maps you can find and the building doesn’t show up anywhere. So, after an hour trying to find a class you’re not actually in, you might’ve scrambled over to the Utah State Universtiy Bookstore to look for a book only to find all the used books already purchased while you were out chasing down the flying ESLC.

On your way home, you might’ve returned to your car to find a parking ticket to boot.

Have no fear, Utah State University intramurals are here.

Intramural competition will begin next Monday – whether you fancy football, volleyball, softball, soccer, or golf – intramurals may be able to offer you the relief from your current life you’re looking for.

This year’s flag football competition can offer a quicker, non-contact sport as compared to traditional American football.

In flag football, each team will field seven players and these players will have four plays to move the ball 20 yards down the 80-yard field. Upon scoring, teams will have the option of going for a one-or two-point attempt. Each half will consist of 20 minutes. The clock will only be stopped during timouts and after the two-minute warning.

The returning champions from last year, Thundering Herd, will be competing in the same division as the only other returning team, 4th & Goal. These teams will be playing Tuesday evening at 5:30 p.m., along with newcomer Play Li Canimals (say it fast). The only other returning teams that placed last year are Peanut Butter M&M in the women’s division, and Maximum, co-rec division champions.

Competition will begin next Monday on the HPER field.

Let’s take a look at volleyball. The men’s and co-rec divisions will be competing with an 8-foot net while the women’s division will raise a 7-foot-4 net. Teams will play the best two out of three games. No returning champions have registered for play so far this year. Games will be played in the HPER, Room 201.

Softball will make its opening debut next week and games will be on the HPER field. The teams are all co-rec, and will be comprised of five guys and five girls. The games will last either seven innings or 50 minutes, whichever happens first.

Most of the typical softball league rules will apply, including the three-ball, two-strike rule. Batting lineups must rotate between genders.

Soccer will kick off on Sept 17. The only two divisions will be men’s and co-rec. Play will take place on the east end of the HPER fields and east of the tennis courts.

Golf will also tee off on September 17. Most participants will enter with a partner in order to compete in the second and fourth week-best-ball play. Those who enter as individuals will be paired together during the best-ball competition.

Participants will set their own tee times and receive a $4 refund on green fees from the intramural office. The best part, it’s free to participate! Come golf four dollars cheaper and win prizes which will be awarded the second, third and fourth weeks. A lot of spots have not been filled and even though some deadlines have passed, the intramural office will gracefully allow teams to still sign up through Monday for flag football, volleyball and soccer.

Times still open for past deadlines:

Volleyball – Co-ed: Monday at 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Women’s: Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Flag Football – Men’s: Monday and Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Co-ed: Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Softball – Co-ed: Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
