COLUMN: Involvement is key

Duke Di Stefano

Welcome back students. I am so excited to welcome each of you back to Utah State University. I hope you had an excellent summer and are now ready for an unforgettable year. Your Associated Students of USU officers have been working hard over the summer to provide a year of excitement for you. To get the whole year started, we have the Week of Welcome. This first week of school is full of many opportunities to get to know your administration, to get to know the clubs on campus and to have a good time. I encourage each of you to take the chance to get involved in the Week of Welcome activities. Start the year off with a bang.

Along with the first week of school, each officer has been working on their own way to make your year at USU unforgettable. We have many opportunities to learn about and participate with each of our colleges here on campus. Throughout the year each senator will have a week set aside full of traditions and opportunities that pertain to their respective college. We have many great convocations scheduled and many athletic events we can look forward to. We will also have a great chance to increase our awareness of diversity. There will also be many activities, including: the HOWL, Mardi Gras, Traditions Week and Homecoming Week, just to name a few.

As we look further into the new school year, I would like to remind you of Conrad Hilton’s words, “Success … seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don’t quit.” This next school year will prove to be challenging in many ways. Each of us will face things that we have never faced before. There are many people here at USU who will help to keep you moving. We have an excellent administration, faculty and staff, but most importantly, we have an amazing student body. As we pull together over the next year, great things will come from us. We will help each other keep moving and we will make this the best year at USU.

The most important thing that each of us can do over this next year is get involved. Take an active role at USU and you will keep moving and success will be yours.

There are many different ways to get involved at USU; the possibilities are endless. ASUSU provides a great avenue to get involved through their many committees. There are also clubs and organizations to become involved with. Intramural sports provide another avenue to each of us as students. By being involved, you will each have the chance to find an area to complement you major or minor, but more importantly, it will give you a chance to work with and for your fellow students. If you are unsure about clubs and organizations, intramural sports or ASUSU committees, come and visit with any ASUSU officer or staff member and check out the involvement guide. This is your guide to every registered club, organization, and intramural sport team. I promise we have something to fit your interests, and if we don’t, we’ll work on creating a club that does.

Get ready for a year full of fun and excitement, get involved, and help others succeed. If you have any questions, concerns, problems or ideas please don’t hesitate to contact myself or another ASUSU officer. We were elected to represent you and your ideas. You can find us in the Taggart Student Center on the third floor or at various places on campus. It is our goal this year to work hand in hand with the students. Watch for us on campus and make sure to give us your ideas and feedback. Let’s make this a memorable year at USU. GO AGGIES!
