COLUMN: School of opportunity

As Sun-Tzu once said, “Opportunities multiply as they are seized.”

Nov. 11 through 15 all students are invited to take advantage of the opportunities Business Week has to offer.

Business Week is an exciting week for the College of Business to increase college pride and show the rest of Utah State University what we’re made of. While we may not have giant tractors to publicize our week, or a rivalry between another college, we do have the reputation for putting on an awesome week with events suited for all majors.

Caryn Beck-Dudley, College of Business dean, has a goal for the college, to work on developing a School of Opportunity. This project involves providing opportunities for students of all majors to do more than memorize facts, but to become critical thinkers who are able to create and implement a vision of the world as a better place. We hope the activities and events planned for Business Week will offer these opportunities.

Business Week will start Monday with a Kickoff Breakfast from 9:30 until the food is gone in the Business Building foyer. Also on Monday, we have teamed up with Student Alumni Association (SAA) to put on a Dress For Success Fashion Show at 11:30 a.m. in the Taggart Student Center Sunburst Lounge. Come join us for the chance to win a $50 gift certificate to Nordstrom.

Tuesday at 9 a.m. you have the chance to learn about some amazing internships USU students have had at the Internship Forum in the Business Building, Room 211. Also on Tuesday, College of Business students have the chance to “Meet the Dean.” Beck-Dudley has been the dean of the COB for a few short months, but she has made some amazing strides and accomplishments to better the college. Students can come hear the dean speak (and ask questions) at noon on the ninth floor of the Business Building.

Wednesday, Business Council, in cooperation with the Sports Academy, is excited to bring you the annual Business Building Drop. At 10:30 a.m. we will be dropping 1,200 Ping-Pong balls from the roof of the building. If you get a Ping-Pong ball with a number on it, you may have just won great prizes. Also on Wednesday, Career Services has worked hard to bring us the Alumni Forum. It will be located on the ninth floor of the Business Building from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Come speak with USU graduates who now hold executive positions in such companies as Deloitte & Touche, AOL, IBM, and Jamba Juice, just to name a few.

Thursday we will be pleased to have LeeAnne Linderman, senior vice president of Zions Bank, come speak to us about her success as a woman in the business world. This event will be at 10:30 a.m. in the Sunburst Lounge.

Even if you aren’t a business major, please come take advantage of these opportunities to broaden your horizons and better yourself. Business is everywhere. It is the lifeblood for successful communities.
