COLUMN: Singing the songs of our lives

Justin Berry

Have you ever noticed that songs and music seem to be everywhere we are – be it in a store, an elevator, the car or even at home when we study or try to sleep?

Music seems to inspire us to be better, cure our sadness, make us happy, pump us up and … well, you get the idea. So with that in mind, I decided to relate the experiences of love through song. From the ’80s pop era to today, songs say it all.

Now, I know not everyone has the same experiences, but come on, this is a university which means it is the most captive meat-market in the world. And we all know someone who has been in “love” before, and before that, and before that, and before that.

Just imagine this next scene taking place on a grassy hill beneath a large lighted building of your choice overlooking the city, it is better that way.

“Come on Eileen,” why do you have to bring up “Gloria,” “Amanda,” “Veronica” and “Sara?” “That was Yesterday,” when I was “Caught up in the Rapture,” but it was all “Tainted Love.” “That was Then, This is Now.” “I can see Clearly Now (the Rain is Gone.)” It is all just a “Misunderstanding.” So I will not burden you with “Apologies;” besides they were all just “Blasphemous Rumors.”

I mean, when “I Saw You Standing There,” you “Take My Breath Away,” with those “Betty Davis Eyes,” those “Blue Eyes,” and “The Voice.” There you were, “The Lady in Red,” and I realized “I Will Always Love You.” I sat there “Wishing” I had “Died in Your Arms.” “For the First Time in My Life” “I Want to Know What Love Is” – to experience “The Power of Love.” And I see it all “In Your Eyes.”

But now you come to me with “Sad Eyes” and “I know There’s Something Going On.” So “Is There Something I Should Know?” “What’s On Your Mind?” “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” I wish I could just “Take it Away,” but I am “Crazy for You” and I “Believe,” that “It’s Inevitable” even if we are going “Against All Odds.”

It is like we are on a “Ship of Fools” and love is “In the Air Tonight.” And then “When I Look at You,” I get “Lost in Your Eyes,” those “Angle Eyes,” and I realize just how much “Your Love is Driving Me Crazy.”

Now I know you are my “Best Friend’s Girl,” but you have me “Wrapped Around your Finger.” “Love is a Battlefield,” and “In the End” “It’s my Life” and you are going to see “It’s Gonna Be Me,” “When You Close Your Eyes.”

It was like “Heaven.” But now, “The Smile has Left your Eyes.” “Baby, Come Back to Me.” “When I see You Smile,” you “Make Me Lose Control.” We can be just like “Jack & Diane.” “These Dreams” are “Straight from the Heart.”

But now you are “Breaking us in Two.” “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?” Why make us both “Victims” who were “Lost in Love?” This was never just an “Obsession.” I am “Mad about You.” And I am not “Making Love out of Nothing at All.” You walked into my life and became the “Biggest part of Me.”

You say “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” but now I see your “True Colors.” You are nothing but a “Cold-hearted Snake.” Isn’t it “Ironic?” Normally it is the girl who is “All Cried Out.”

“Listen to Your Heart.” You are walking away “Just When I Needed You the Most.” “Don’t let the Sun Go Down” on this “Owner of a Lonely Heart.” Oh hell, “Here comes the Rain again!” Why is it “You Don’t Want Me Anymore?” Is it because “I Love You?”

You can walk away from me if you want to, but “This Guy’s in Love with You.” Even if “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”

I thought I was “Living La Vida Loca,” but I ended up with “Shattered Dreams.” There will “Always be Something to Remind Me” of how much I am “Missing You.” I really am “My Own Worst Enemy.” “Oops, I did it again.”

“Good-bye Yellow Brick Road,” I guess I am just “Addicted to Love.” But now “It’s the End of the World as We Know It.” “Bye, Bye, Bye.” If you would just “Stay,” “Wouldn’t it be good?” “Hella Good!” This is “Hard to Handle,” I guess “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.”
