COLUMN: Students the ones who make elections happen
As the ASUSU Elections for 2005-06 approach, some students are contemplating whether to running for an office or not. However, those considering might want to take into consideration the changes that have occurred with this process.
ASUSU Elections were originally scheduled for March 2-9 for this spring, but have now changed to March 30-April 5, with the filing deadline on March 9 at 3 p.m. These changes have been made due to some restructuring of offices on the ASUSU Executive Council. The Executive Council has been attending many meetings to get a model made for the new structuring of ASUSU. In the past, there have been councils that have decided there is a need in changing the structure of ASUSU, but have been too late to make those changes. This week, the 2004-05 Executive Council decided to follow through with these new changes.
There is nothing wrong with the way ASUSU has been working, but there are some positions that could use a little re-vamping. Just like any corporate company that evaluates their office at the end of the year, ASUSU is doing the same. By evaluating the offices within ASUSU, some changes can occur to create a more efficient council. A timeline has been made to have a model created by Feb. 16, followed by a special election on Feb. 24. This is where students can vote whether changes should be made for future councils or keep the structure the way it is. It is students’ time to make a difference in how ASUSU should work, so students should remember to vote on what they want to see happen.
Anyone who wants to run for office is more than welcome to and should if they are willing and wanting to make a difference for Utah State University. Packets are available in TSC 326 and can be picked up anytime before the filing deadline. However, if students don’t decide to run but want to be a part of the elections process, there is going to be a meeting for the elections committee on Feb. 18 at 5 p.m. at the tables in front of TSC 326. Here students can help out with any of the activities, forums, chaired positions, etc., that they want to be a part of.
We need students who want to make a difference for this university and who have a drive to help make the voices of the students heard. This is your time to run for office and become a part of these experiences. Don’t waste time in deciding to run, just “MAKE IT HAPPEN!”
