COLUMN: Utes leave immature image in Logan
There was absolutely no need for the class-less display the Utah football team, fans and band put on after the Utes 48-6 blowout of the Aggies.
After the game, the Utah team gathered in front of their fans in the northwest corner and cheered for them. Then they ran to the other side of the field and cheered for the few fans who had gathered on that side despite repeated pleas from the stadium announcer to leave the stadium.
The Utah band then played for another five to 10 minutes after the team finally left the field.
These antics might be understandable after a home game, or even after an important road win, but Utah had just won 48-6 over weaker, non-conference team.
If they had beat BYU or Oklahoma by that score on the road, then there would be reason to celebrate. But beating an already struggling USU team by 42 points is not the time to go whooping and hollering around on the Aggie’s home turf.
But the team still went on as though they struggled to overcome great odds to win Saturday. If they are really as good as they say there are, they should be used to winning like that without the excessive celebration.
The team may have been excited, but there was no excuse for the Ute marching band to continue to play music long after the game was over like it was a home game. Not only did this interfere with interviews being conducted on the field, but it was a slap in the face to USU fans leaving the game.
And there was absolutely no reason for Urban Meyer to draw an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for arguing with an official while holding a 41-6 third-quarter lead.
Shame on Utah for acting so immature. If they wanted to carry on like they did, they should have gone to Salt Lake City to do it.
