Combating Cabin Fever

There are alternatives to simply staying inside and watching movies during a Logan winter-they just require a little effort and creativity.

Some USU students have found tent making a fun past time on the weekends as they dragged out all the mattresses, pillows, blankets and chairs they could come up with to make a ‘fort’ in their common rooms as they spent the night sleeping in it and watching movies on their laptops.

Stefanie Flores, freshman in civil engineering, said it feels camping.

At other times, pillow fights have broken out randomly between a couple of students as they chased each other back and forth through the halls of the Living and Learning Center before someone gave in.

Flores, who participated, said, “It’s always fun hitting each other in a loving way.”

Organizing game nights and inviting neighbors to participate is one idea.

Cherise Snow, freshman majoring in music, said games are beneficial for meeting people.

“I didn’t know anyone until then,” Snow said.

Other students have found ways of entertainment as they helped decorate their rooms and chipped in to help pay for the materials used in covering the walls in the shared room in their suites.

Missy Brunisholz, senior majoring in journalism, said reading books to one another is a great way to kill time.

“Nothing is as good as sitting down at the end of the day with your roommates, pulling out a book and reading out loud,” Brunisholz said. “It takes you back to grade school and is a great de-stresser.”

Melissa Allen, freshman in nutrition and food science, said she enjoys cooking dinner or dessert for a group because it helps her get out of her dorm room.

“Every Sunday, a friend and I are going to try and cook a different dish,” Allen said. “It helps build skills and allows me to bond with my roommate.
