Community night allows student athletes to show appreciation

Giving back is important.

Members of the 15 Utah State University sponsored athletics teams will do their share Monday night as they participate in the second annual Aggie Community Night.

“The reason we started it was because we wanted a way for our student athletes to thank the community for their support over the whole year for all of the sports,” Michelle Wilson said.

Wilson is the director of Athletics marketing and promotions.

Community Night will take place in the Stan Laub Training Center and the adjacent track from 6 to 8 p.m.

Wilson said this gives participants an opportunity to see inside the training center because most people have no idea what the building is.

The event was started last year, and Wilson said things went well. She said it is the type of activity that needs to happen every year so the community knows about it.

It is mandatory for athletes to take part in Community Night, and each team has to come up with an activity, she said.

Wilson said the activities are geared mostly for children but everyone is welcome.

“Tennis brings a little net and tennis racquets and play with them,” she said. “[The community] can go from station to station and meet all of the athletes and play with them for a while.”

Although Wilson said some of the younger athletes may find the activity time consuming at first but find it a worthwhile afterward.

The activity has been promoted through newspaper advertisements, radio spots and communication with the local elementary schools, Wilson said.
