Country crooner comes to Cache
Her voice has been described as powerful but quiet, which is one reason why the Cache Valley Center for the Arts thought Kathy Mattea would be a perfect match for the community. “We’re very excited to have her come,” Amanda Matthews, Marketing Director for the CVCA, said, “she’s such a big name and we’re very lucky to have her here.” Though best known for her country hit “18 Wheels and a Dozen Roses,” Mattea’s 20-year career has seen dramatic changes. The West Virginian native recorded country songs under the Mercury label for seventeen years. She switched to Narada and then Virgin Records where she stayed because the company gave her freedom to explore different musical styles. Under Virgin Records, Mattea released three records of folk, bluegrass, and Celtic music. Mattea’s awards include 1988 Country Music Awards Single of the Year for “18 Wheels and a Dozen Roses,” 1990 CMA Female Vocalist of the Year, 1990 Grammy for Best Country Performance by a Female, 1997 CMA Best Video of the Year for “455 Rocket” and the 2001 Minnie Pearl Humanitarian Award. Friday’s concert will feature songs from her newest album, “Right Out of Nowhere,” released in 2005. “There will probably be some audience requests, as well,” Matthews said. Logan is part of Mattea’s 2006 tour program, which includes stops in Idaho, Washington, Illinois, and Tennessee. “This concert will sell out,” Matthews said, “It’s very close to being sold out already. Seating is very limited.” Tickets are $18-$30 and can be purchased online at www.centerforthearts.us or by calling 752-0026.-limarc@cc.usu.edu
