Delta Sigma Phi to host fund-raising walk

In an effort to “challenge each man to a greater good,” the fraternity Delta Sigma Phi will host its last fund raiser of the year to benefit the March of Dimes. Cache Valley WalkAmerica 2001 is scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m.

Participants will walk a 7-mile route from Willow Park to Logan Regional Hospital and back, said Jason Robey, president of Delta Sigma Phi since December.

“In the past we’ve been more focused on raising money,” he said. “This year the focus is getting people to join in the walk.”

The fraternity is a national sponsor for the March of Dimes, an organization dedicated to fighting birth defects, said Greg Johanson, another member of the brotherhood.

“Every year we help do fund raisers,” Johanson said. “This year we have [money-collection] jugs at Campus Corner and other convenience stores.”

After school ends, the jugs will remain permanently in those stores to raise money for the March of Dimes.

Johanson said the fraternity has sponsored other fund raisers throughout the year.

“Last week we had a pool tournament at the Bull Pen,” Johanson said. “We are also selling candy bars.”

Robey said Lee’s Marketplace and Gossner’s have both donated food and time to the Walk-America event this Saturday. Other businesses that have donated or will donate to the fund raiser are the Bank of Utah, Kmart and ICON Health and Fitness. A series of six rest stops along the walking route will each be sponsored by a different organization or business.
