Dollar Days raises money for Women’s Center

Students walking to and from classes Wednesday afternoon encountered a mechanical bull on the Taggart Student Center Patio. The bull was just part of Alpha Chi Omega’s Dollar Days at Utah State Univeristy.

Dollar Days, which lasted from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., donated proceeds to the USU Women’s Center.

Other activities were offered for students to enjoy. Some bought peanuts to throw at Big Blue and other costumed animals in cages, and having a local radio station there playing popular music to help entertain students while they enjoyed their lunch.

If there was one part that seemed to be a favorite, it was the hamburgers and drinks for a dollar each. Students in the large line waited patiently for their lunch.

Andy Dilley, the announcer at the event and a senior studying history, said the burgers were his favorite part of the event.

Alpha Chi Omega sorority members helped with everything at the event and were in charge of everything from making the burgers to helping control the mechanical bull.

Linda Speer, an Alpha Chi Omega member, said she decided to do Dollar Days because they are for a good cause.

“How can you not help when it is for people less fortunate than you?” asked Speer, a freshman studying marketing.

Brittany Duke, also an Alpha Chi Omega member and a sophomore studying physics, said she liked raising money for the Women’s Center, and she thought the bull was the coolest part of the event.

“I got hit in the head with a peanut, by a gorilla,” said Tyler Severe, a junior dual majoring in marketing and Spanish. “Wearing the cowboy hat and riding the bull was definitely the highlight for me.”

The bull was one of the main attractions there. Everyone who rode the bull got to wear a cowboy hat while they rode, though a lot of the time the hat fell right off. Many bystanders watched in laughter as fellow students jumped on and quickly flew off the rotating bull.

Camber Durfee, a freshman majoring in mechanical engineering, said the parts of Dollar Days he most enjoyed were the hamburgers and getting to watch the monkeys in the cage.

Although some of the animals in the cages were throwing peanuts at students, others threw candy and gave out coins for free bread slices and ice cream at the hub.

Some of the animals were also out of the cage greeting students, promoting students to participate in Dollar Days, and just trying to make a good time for everyone there.
