Dynamic dance troupe brings innovation and unconventional repertoire to Logan

With a dance list that spans classical ballet, theatrical jazz and contemporary dance, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago has a chance to show Logan audiences the real meaning of body language.

Established in 1977, the company has received numerous five star reviews and has earned the status of being one of the most stirring dance troupes in the nation.

The company relies on the talents of a relatively large number of choreographers who have created the diverse repertoire the dance company has become known for.

“It’s a pretty action packed job,” rehearsal director Monica Trogani said. “The work we perform is not based on any strict technique.”

In 2004, Hubbard Street 2, a second company which broke off of the original group, came to Utah State University.

This time around, the original company will be dancing across the stage at the Ellen Eccles Theatre.

Though many people admit understanding modern dance is difficult, Chicago dance critic Kairol Rosenthal gives several tips to help audience members understand and enjoy live dance. 1) Use your own vocabulary: Don’t let fancy words keep you from having a good time.

2) See the big picture: Just like a play is more than acting, a dance is more than dancing. notice the lights, costumes, music and props.

3) Enjoy the action: Even if you don’t know why they’re doing it, enjoy the moves the dancers make.
