Ellis leads the Aggies to BWC title
Utah Statesman: How does it feel to be named USU athlete of the week?
Tina Ellis: It’s an honor, very much so. It’s exciting, but definitely a surprise.
US: You placed third in All-around at the Big West Conference Tournament. How did you feel about that?
TE: I was really, really excited. I wasn’t able to place on any other individual events, but I managed to hit all four [events], so I guess that was enough to bump me up into the top-three for all-around.
US: How do you think the team has progressed throughout the season?
TE: We started off really good, and then we had a little bit of a bumpy road, but we’re coming back so strong. Winning the Big West Tournament was a good confidence-builder, and a lot of fun.
US: How is the team feeling going into the NCAA regional tournament?
TE: [Because of winning BWC] Everyone is really into it and ready to go. We’re all really excited for regionals.
US : The beam was an event the team struggled with. Do you think the team has improved?
TE: We actually had two falls [at the Big West Tournament]. But in the last couple meets before that, we’ve been confident and really positive. We’ve gotten so much better. Things are just continuing to progress.
US: When did you start in gymnastics?
TE: I was 4, so for about 15 years.
US: Talk a little about your family and where you are from.
TE: I’m from Salt Lake City – well, Kearns. I’ve lived there all my life. I have one younger sister and my parents. I love them. They’re fun and they support me a lot.
US: If you could have dinner with anybody, living or dead, who would it be and why?
TE: My grandparents. They inspire me. I don’t get to see them a lot and so when I do, I just have so much fun. They are so cute and I love them.
US: What is your favorite part about gymnastics?
TE: The thrill of competition and hitting a good solid set. Knowing you did the best you could and worked all year to be able to do that. When it all comes together and it’s all good.
US: When you do have free time, what do you like to do?
TE: Play. I have friends I hang out with, and my roommates. Just watch movies, hang out.
