English Dept. receives donation

By Emily Flinders

Cecilia Foxley donated $10,000 to the Cecilia Foxley Scholarship Endowment, the English Department recently announced.

According to Department Head Jeffrey Smitten, this donation was the third in a series of donations that is building a fund to support students who will teach high school English. The fund will eventually hold $100,000 and Foxley is making donations until it reaches this point. The fund currently holds $30,000.

The English department’s Web site displays Foxley’s dedication to education. She worked for more than 10 years as commissioner of the Utah System of Higher Education and chief executive officer of the State Board of Regents. She was formerly in teaching and administrative positions at USU, University of Iowa, and University of Minnesota. She received her bachelor’s degree from USU and her master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Utah.

According to the gift agreement drafted between Foxley and The Utah State University Foundation, donations will be made yearly over a five year time period and the scholarship will be funded by 2012.
