Explanation from editor was a cop out
Editor,
What an easy cop out! You mean to tell me as Editor in Chief you have no say in what kind of limit each ad must adhere to!?
You seem to be missing the point. Of course, you can go to JC Penny or Kohls and pick up a lingerie ad where you will find women half clothed, but even there – will you find any pictures with women posing with bare breasts?
The point is, the ad paid for by Persian Peacock and ran by our college depicts a woman posing with her upper half naked.
Now obviously we should not censor who can run ads in the Statesman, nobody is asking for that. Persian Peacock, FOCUS, the LDS Institute – whoever can run an ad in the Statesman. But let there be some restrictions on pictures just like there are on words (you’re not going to see an article using f* or the likes). And you would think that naked poses, regardless if it be top or bottom, fake or real, six inches or six feet, half covered or bare would be outside the limits. Naked is naked. If someone wants naked pics they know where to find them; but let those who wish to avoid it have the chance to avoid it.
Again, the issue is not who can run ads but rather what the limits to those ads are.
