Fans bring the Spectrum on road

For these Aggie fans, fair weather isn’t even part of their vocabulary.

To them, college isn’t about a bunch of boring classes. It’s about the memories they make and the time spent cheering on their college basketball team.

They are the self-proclaimed Spectrum on Wheels club and they have one mission: to teach teams everywhere about ReSpectrum.

Respect the Spectrum.

“The Spectrum is a mentality,” one of the club’s founders, Skyler Fredrickson said. “A winning mentality. [The Spectrum] is an atmosphere … when all 4,000 students cheering have that bond.”

When Fredrickson and some of his friends were coming back to Logan after the 2004 BYU game, Fredrickson said they got the idea to form the club.

He said they thought it would be so cool to be able to take the atmosphere of the Spectrum wherever the team went. That idea became reality when the SOW club took to the road to cheer on the Aggies in Reno. Whether or not the SOW’s nine members made a difference in the Aggies’ win over Nevada or not is hard to tell.

Aggie Kevin Foulger, another one of the club’s founders, said the Spectrum’s atmosphere creates a bond with all the students there cheering for their team. That, he said, is what makes a college experience. He said in the future, he’s not going to remember what classes he sat through, but he will remember going to Reno and – hopefully – traveling to other basketball games on the road.

Fredrickson said any fans that are rowdy and dedicated are welcome to join the club. He said the club plans to take the Spectrum to the Idaho games in Moscow and Boise as well as the WAC tournament in Reno the second weekend in March.

Other plans Fredrickson said the club has talked about include getting shirts that match the color of the seats of the Spectrum for road trips, creating a scholarship for rowdy fans somewhere down the road and/or buying a bus for the club to travel in when going to games on the road. These are only things the club has discussed, whether or not they will actually happen is debatable, he said.

For those interested in joining the club, Fredrickson said they meet on the east side of the Spectrum at least two hours before every home game.
