Flu shots available without restrictions

The Bear River Health Department has lifted restrictions on flu shots, making the vaccine available to people even in low-risk categories.

Previously, shortages of the vaccination forced officials to limit distribution of the shot to people with a higher risk of contracting the flu – women who are pregnant, children younger than 2 and people older than 65.

Immunization Coordinator Carol Morrell said the department was waiting to see if enough vaccinations would be available to offer them to the general public.

“They were just holding off a little bit to see if everybody could get some,” she said. “Right now, things look good.”

While Morrell said most college students are not at high risk of getting the flu, she would recommend the vaccination for people who work with children or who are chronically ill.

“People with chronic illnesses like diabetes, asthma, heart and lung disease would be considered high risk,” she said. “Pregnancy is considered high risk. If you live in a house with a baby that’s less than six months, everyone is suggested to get a flu shot.”

Morrell said some insurance policies will cover the cost of the vaccine. For others, the price of the shot is $20.

Still, she said there are precautions that should be taken even if someone doesn’t get vaccinated.

“Whether or not they get the shot, we really push hand washing and hygiene,” Morrell said. “If you’re sick, use a Kleenex. Try not to be around a lot of people if you’re sick.”

Morrell also recommended avoiding touching the eyes, nose and mouth, as germs are often spread through such contact.

The Bear River Health Department is located at 655 E. 1300 North. Vaccinations are offered every day except Thursday and weekends from 9-11 a.m. Shots are also available Tuesdays from 1-4 p.m., Wednesdays from 1-6 p.m. and Fridays from 1-4 p.m.
