Football team promoting in community
The Brent Guy era is officially underway for the Utah State University football team.
With a week of practices under their belt, players and coaches finished off the week by meeting the community and handing out schedules Saturday. The wide receivers mingled with locals at Macey’s while the defensive linemen were at Home Depot.
Guy brought the idea with him from Arizona State and feels it helps to get the community involved.
“It’s much easier to come out to the games when they have someone to cheer for,” Guy said about the team out meeting the public.
The fans agree.
“I think it is a good idea,” Curtis Nelson, a current Big Blue Club member, said, “because I think it helps the community feel an ownership for the team – and when you feel an ownership, your more apt to donate services and support.”
Nelson was disappointed when he found out there would be no Blue-White game, or intersquad scrimmage, this year.
“I just didn’t think we could present (the Blue-White game) in a way that would be positive,” Guy said.
Guy said he feels he has not had enough time with the team and does not have enough healthy players to present a full game.
Instead of a Blue-White game, the football team will have a scrimmage open to everyone on April 15 at Romney Stadium to see the progress of the team.
With the team learning new schemes and plays, Guy said he feels his team is coming along well.
“We’ve got a motto of BTB – Better Than Before,” Guy said. “Which means we need to be continuously getting better and improving.”
Chris Curtis, a red-shirt freshman wide receiver, said he likes the new coaches and plays.
“The plays are easier to learn because they are less complicated,” he said.
The team will be in the community again Saturday at The Cache Valley Mall. On April 9 at Sam’s Club and Wal-Mart, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at both venues.
