Former USU student pleads guilty to sexual assaults
Former Utah State University student Jason Brian Relopez pled guilty to one count of sexual assault and one count of rape.
“Honestly in cases like this I always appreciate when the defendant takes responsibility for their actions, because then the traumatized victims don’t have to testify at a trial,” said Cache County prosecuting attorney Barbara Lachmar. “I feel grateful.”
Lachmar said it gives victims closure when the perpetrator admits to the criminal charges because they are validated.
The Adult Probation and Parole Department is now reviewing additional information to find an appropriate sentence for Relopez. He is scheduled to be sentenced on March 29 at 1:30 p.m.
The presentencing process consists of gathering information like Relopez’s education, work history and finances. It will also take into account the impact the crime has had on the victims’ lives.
Jenny Nielsen is a court advocate for victims, and has worked with Relopez’s victims in this case. She said Relopez pleaded guilty as part of a negotiation they worked out.
“We have their blessings and this is what they wanted,” Nielsen said. “They don’t have to testify.”
While there is no decision on his sentence yet, Relopez is guaranteed conviction and he will be listed on the sex offender registry.
“That will happen. He will be on there for life,” Nielsen said.
