Fraternity loses brother
A former Utah State University student died Saturday from self-inflicted wounds at his parent’s home in Hyde Park, according to the North Park Police Department and the Sigma Chi fraternity, of which he was a member.
Kiley Drysdale, 21, was a member of the fraternity from Spring to Fall 2004. He graduated from Sky View High School in 2002 and attended USU afterward but was not enrolled this semester.
Tiffany Evans, adviser to the Greek system at USU, said the university and Greek system are doing everything possible to help students cope with Drysdale’s death.
Monday evening, Dave Bush, from the university’s Counseling Center, spoke to members of the Greek community during an all-Greek meeting.
Shawn Coon, Sigma Chi president, read a statement from his fraternity of about 40 members, 20 to 25 of whom live in the house. A moment of silence was held during the meeting as well.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Drysdale family,” according to the fraternity’s official statement. “We are currently making every effort to help Kiley’s family in any way that we can.”
Evans said Drysdale’s parents were on vacation at the time and returned Tuesday. His funeral will be Saturday in Hyde Park.
Although Evans said that this is not the first tragedy of the semester, Drysdale’s death has impacted students across the university, especially within the Greek system.
“When a major incident happens with students, it’s critical to address it,” she said. “Students have a tendency to runaway from these situations.”
The university’s Counseling Center offers students help with grief or concerns that might or might not be related to Drysdale’s death.
Staff members from the center were on hand during the Monday’s meeting.
Neither Evans nor Coon offered a cause for Drysdale’s death.
