The Utah State University club ultimate Frisbee team went 0-5 in their first major tournament of the season Saturday and Sunday in Santa Barbara, Calif. The team competed against 20 teams from throughout the country, including eight of the top 10 teams in the nation.

“We had a fairly new team going down,” team captain Dustin Smith said. “It was the first big tournament for them and it was really good to see what we need to do better.”

The team played four games Saturday, and lost to Arizona State University, Ohio State University and the University of California Berkeley, all of which are ranked in the top 10. They narrowly lost to California Polytechnic University, who beat them by three points.

USU played one game Sunday, which was lost to the University of Texas before the tournament was rained out.

“Everybody played well as a whole team,” Smith said. “It was good for them to see how each other play.”

USU’s next tournament will be in February, but the team hasn’t decided where to go yet. The team will compete in two tournaments in March – one in Oregon and one in New Mexico, Smith said.
