Frisbee club goes winless
Experience provided the edge for the Brigham Young University A-team to prevail against the Aggies’ ultimate frisbee club in the round-robin portion of Utah State’s own tournament on Saturday.
Utah State was the first to score in the game, to which BYU responded to tie up the score. USU and would eventually gain a 2-1 lead against the Cougars, but that’s when BYU took over to gain a 13-4 victory.
“We came out really strong, the team was fired up. Our defense came out really strong and shut them down,” USU Head Coach Harold Ikerd said, “but they made some adjustments, and that helped them.”
Team chemistry and experience was the deciding factor to help propel the Cougars over the Aggies, Ikerd said, but he believes his team is equal to BYU in athletic ability.
“The team experience of BYU has led them to have more patience and discipline,” junior Jason Owens said after the game.
“If we get our heads out of our asses, nobody stands a chance, not even the national champions that are here,” he said referring to the 2004 champion Colorado University.
Prior to the game against the Cougars, the Aggies lost the first game of the round-robin portion to Colorado University 12-5, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation in the Ultimate Players Association College Division. Colorado has played in the UPA National Championship game each of the past two years, winning it in 2004.
The team was overwhelmed at the beginning against CU and never had a lead in the game, Ikerd said, and all of the team’s points came in the second half.
USU also had two one-point losses in the round robin, losing to UNLV 9-8 and Colorado Mines 11-10. And in the bracket portion of the tournament, USU lost in the first round to UNLV 10-5. Colorado College would end up winning the tournament, beating Colorado University in the championship game.
Ikerd said one of the team’s goals is to organize a women’s team, but they currently need more players. The team had five women in attendance for the tournament on Saturday, but were not able to play co-ed, because the other teams invited to the tournament did not bring any women. There is, however, not a rule that women cannot play against an all-men’s team.
“If the women want to step up and play, then most teams are more than willing to let them,” the club’s assistant public relations officer Amber Lucks said.
To have a women’s team, they need at least seven players, but would like to have more for subs.
For any women interested, contact Chris Pitts at chrispitts@cc.usu.edu or the team will be holding women’s-only practices on the Quad Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30-5:30.
The team’s next tournament will be the Lucky Sevens Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. on Nov. 12-13.
