The Utah State University ultimate Frisbee club team, which has gone 5-2 in the preseason, will compete in Santa Barbara, Calif., Saturday and Sunday in their first major tournament of the season.

The tournament involves 20 men’s teams from across the United States, including eight of the top 10 ranked teams in the nation, team captain Dustin Smith said.

“This is an awesome opportunity because all of the teams are ranked in the top 25,” Smith said.

The teams are divided into four pools of five teams each. USU will compete from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday against teams from Ohio State University, the University of California Berkley, the University of Arizona and California Polytechnic University.

The top two teams in each pool will move into the quarterfinals Sunday, so USU needs to beat at least three of the four teams they play on Saturday to advance to the A-bracket on Sunday, Smith said.

Smith said he thinks the team has a good chance of proceeding onto the quarterfinals, and he expects some individuals to compete particularly well.

“I think Brandon Tucker will do well,” Smith said. “I expect good plays from him and also from Eric Tobler.”

The team will return to Logan following their games Sunday.
