Students filled every seat and then some in Huntsman Hall’s Perry Pavillion, Friday, September 7. They lined the walls and stood, crowded in the doorways to hear what Gail Miller, owner of the Utah Jazz, had to say during her Focused Fridays panel.

Miller is an American businesswoman, widow of Larry H. Miller and the wealthiest person in the state of Utah. She and her husband initially bought 50 percent of the Jazz, and when they gained more funds a few years later, purchased the other half to become the outright owners.

Gail stated to the audience, on multiple occasions, that they didn’t buy the Jazz as a business venture, but more to be a staple of Utah’s culture and an ambassador to the world on Utah’s behalf. With the passing of Larry in 2009, Miller became the sole owner of the Jazz and has remained very vocal about keeping the Jazz in the state of Utah.

The panel covered several topics, such as her personal life, business practicalities, motivation for buying the Jazz, etc. However, the focal points of Gail’s adages were centered on interpersonal communication, opportunities for women in today’s business world, and how people should treat one another.

Ryan Brenchley, a third year business administration student attending the panel, said he admired her ambitious spirit and  could tell she’s truly worked hard to earn what she’s gained.

Brenchley said Gail’s gentle demeanor, kindness and work ethic were admirable traits that he wanted to try to emulate.

As time neared expiration, Gail transitioned out of questions via the interviewer to inquiries from the audience. During this time she answered questions about advice moving forward, further reiterated family values and emphasized being a kind human being. Eventually, the hour was up, Gail Miller and her entourage left the pavillion to applause and attendees went their separate ways, equipped with her insight.
