Garage sale to benefit former USU student Saturday

American Mothers, an organization devoted to building up mothers around the world, is sponsoring a benefit garage sale Saturday.

The garage sale, which will take place in the Fieldhouse from 1 to 5 p.m. will benefit the family of David and Elizabeth Lloyd, former Utah State University students.

The family was beset with medical problems from the time their son, Tyler, was born. Tyler, who is now 8 months old, suffers from a rare heart virus called dilated cardiomyopathy, said Jennifer Cox, president of the Logan chapter of American Mothers.

Cox said the virus wasn’t detected until Tyler exhibited cold-like symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath. The virus could have been taken care of had it been detected sooner, but Tyler ended up requiring a heart transplant.

While Tyler was being diagnosed in West Jordan, Elizabeth decided to visit a doctor to check on some headaches she was experiencing.

“You don’t expect to have a brain tumor at 27,” Cox said.

She said the tumor was removed and Elizabeth is scheduled to start chemotherapy within six months.

American Mothers is a non-profit, non-denominational organization founded in 1933. Cox said during the 1960s, the organization was expanded to meet the needs of young mothers. Elizabeth was a former co-president of the Logan chapter.

Cox said the pledge of American Mothers is to “ask God’s help, love, nurture and educate children and work, pray, study and play together [with their families].”

She said the Logan chapter meets once each month to encourage and support mothers and to help them “get through the next month.”

All proceeds from the garage sale will go straight to the family, Cox said.
