Get to know the candidates: ACADEMIC VP

KARLA PETTY

Karla Petty is the only candidate on the ballot for ASUSU Academic vice president. She’s in.

* Why should students care about ASUSU?

Petty said ASUSU is there because of the students. It is a way to let the students’ voices be heard.

Students have the right to make sure they are getting what they paid for out of their university experience, she said. ASUSU plays the role of the liaison to the administration for the students.

* What research have you done for your platform?

Petty said she has received feedback from current ASUSU Academic Council members about her platform ideas and how plausible they would be to accomplish. She said she has served on the Academic Council all year and has been able to see how things get done.

“I will work to do whatever the students want,” Petty said.

* How do your platform and qualifications relate to your position?

In serving on Academic Council, Petty said, she has had the opportunity to sit in on meetings that deal with the issues of her position. She said she knows the goals the current Academic vice president has been working on and plans to continue where she left off.

“I am also involved in student activities, such as STAB, activities chair for HASS, and an Ombudsman Committee member,” Petty said.

* What is your plan of attack for getting a new testing center at USU?

Petty said she realizes that getting a new testing center is going to take a while because of the budget cuts. However, she said it is important that the road to getting a testing center does not get blocked off. Petty plans on sending out polls to get students’ feedback about the center, which she said would promote more academic honesty and prevent cheating.

“We will stick it out until we get it,” she said.

* How late do you want to extend library hours?

Petty said she wants to focus on getting hours extended on Friday nights and early Saturday mornings. The weekends are the best time for some students to catch up on their studying, she said.

“What would be ideal is to have a 24-hour study environment,” Petty said.
