Golf team battles to seventh-place finish

    The USU golf team went on the road last week to Cal Polytechnic State University to participate in the men’s intercollegiate tournament and took seventh place in the event.
    USU scored 40 over par in the event, shooting a 904. In the individual rounds, USU marked a score of 299 in round one, 303 in round two and 302 in round three.
    British Columbia University won the team championship. Over the three rounds, BCU scored nine over par, marking a 297 in the first round, a 296 in the second round and a 280 in the third. Scott DeBorba of Sacramento State University had the best individual tournament. He shot six under par over the tournament, marking a par round of 72 in the first, a seven under par in the second and a one over par in the third.
    Utah State was led by sophomore Tyson McFarland, who finished tied for 16th overall in the tournament. McFarland scored a 223 in the three rounds of the tournament, finishing seven over par. He shot three over par in the first and third rounds, and only one over par in the second. This was the second consecutive time that McFarland finished as USU’s best.
    Along with McFarland, senior Devin Daniels had USU’s best round. He shot one over par to score a 73 and finished tied for 19th after he scored five over par and three over par on his rounds the previous day. Daniels was USU’s second-best finisher, and he tied for 16th individually in the tournament. Following Daniels as USU’s third best was fellow senior Tyler Labrum. Labrum tied for 23rd and shot 10 over par. Also participating in the event were Thad Truman, who tied for 44th and senior Toph Peterson, who tied for 53rd.
    Next up for Utah State are the Cougars from Provo. USU will compete in the PING Cougar Classic hosted by Brigham Young University Friday, April 24.
