GUEST COLUMN: Attention freshmen! USU has more to offer than just famous Aggie Ice Cream

Culture, diversity, tradition … ice cream? Yes, that’s right. Through the years, Utah State University has become a place with a long-standing heritage. And that isn’t the only thing going for USU. Along with tradition and great ice cream, it is increasingly gaining more culture and diversity with each new student.

Speaking about new students, Monday is just the first for a new batch of Aggies. They will get their chance to experience the nerve-wracking excitement of starting their college careers.

“I can’t wait for it to start,” said Aaron Barr, a freshman.

He explained that waiting and anticipating the start of school wasn’t the greatest.

Do you remember your first day? How about week? Month? Do you remember being worried because you didn’t know where your classes were? Why you were going poor, or what the heck the ‘Quad’ was?

Well, more than likely you finally found your classes, and realized that you had been standing in the Quad the whole time you were looking for your classes. Oh yes, the only reason you were going poor was because you had not yet discovered Ramen Noodles and had been going out to eat every day.

And what about the culture shock? Although some do not consider Logan to be very diverse (but getting there), the USU campus is, making it a place where different ideas are shared among different people.

USU is a melting pot, or as Barr said, “All kinds of different people are smashed into one small place.”

The students have a wonderful opportunity to learn and experience a wide variety of cultures and customs. They also get the chance to join one of the many clubs, under the multicultural organization, created not only to learn but to teach the public about each specific culture.

“I have never been in such a diverse place in my life,” Barr said.

Many freshmen are looking forward to the extra-curricular activities not pertaining to school. What about having fun at USU?

Well, picture this, it’s Friday night and you are sitting in your dorm with a small army of your new friends around your room. “What to do, what to do?” You ask yourselves. What can you really do in Logan, Utah?

There’s the normal, seeing a movie at the Utah Theatre, dancing at Club Skyline or bowling at the Fun Park, which all cost money.

Then there’s the non-traditional activities like watching the skaters fall down at the skate park, feeding the ducks at Willow Park or even going to Burger King and ordering 15 waters. No matter how bored you are there is sure to be an activity to lift the boredom away.

Congratulations to all freshmen and good luck on the years to come.
