Seth Hawkins

Editor’s note: Guymon was named athlete of the week for the week of March 27 – April 1.

Utah Statesman: How has your season been thus far?

Kristen Guymon: I feel like it’s gone real well. I’m excited.

US: How do you feel about your performance at the latest BYU meet, where you took first place in the 1,500-meter?

KG: I ran the times I wanted to run. I’m very pleased.

US: What is your best time for the 1,500m and where did you set that time?

KG: My best time was 4:29. I did it the track season of 2001. That was my freshman year.

US: Why do you run the 1,500m?

KG: It’s the best race ever. It’s short enough it’s a race, but not so short you can’t strategize.

US: Do you run any other events?

KG: I do the 800-meter and the 5,000-meter.

US: What race is your favorite event?

KG: The 1,500m.

US: When did you start running? Why?

KG: I started running competitively in junior high in seventh grade. I ran the mile. I thought I was going to be a sprinter. I considered myself a soccer player. My family were also runners. It’s in my genes to run.

US: Who is your role model?

KG: The person I most look up to is my old teammate from my freshman year, Rebecca Thornley.

US: Do you have any special pre-race warm-ups?

KG: Not really. We run, then we stretch. It’s nothing exciting.

US: Do you do any other sports?

KG: Don’t tell coach, but I do come from a big snow skiing family. No, he knows.

US: Gatorade or Powerade?

KG: Gatorade. I just always drink it. Just take it and go with it.

US: When you were young did you envision yourself running in the future?

KG: I think so, yeah. I remember in elementary school wanting to beat all the boys. I didn’t think I’d ever run in college.
