Gymnastics takes third
The Utah State gymnastics team finished with a score of 194.150, good enough for third place Friday night in Berkley, Calif.
The last time the Utah State gymnastics team met up with San Jose State, took over.
“For this upcoming meet I think we are going to do a lot better,” said one of the team’s co-captains, Rachel Ropelato before the meet. “It will be a better meet overall.”
She also said they would have a better arena, equipment and judging.
She was right.
Because of some trouble with the California Media Relations all scores were handwritten and therefore unofficial.
“I’m very excited,” said Head Coach Ray Corn about Friday night’s meet. “This is a much improved team from last week.”
In first place was the host of the night, California with a score of 195.95. the Arizona Wildcats came in second with a 194.25. USU followed with San Jose rounding out the pack receiving a score of 193.875.
Corn said that his team had a great road score.
“I’m pleased with our composure,” he said. “We looked very competitive.”
The meet was close down the stretch, but some Utah State falls hurt the team.
On the bars, freshman Alex Martin led the way, tying for first place with a score of 9.900. Martin also received a score of 38.750 for her all-around bringing her into fifth place.
On the vault, Rachael Mandy scored a career-high of 9.800 to lead the Aggies.
Both Liesel Kohler and Gretchen Goerlitz received scores of 9.800 each on the floor, putting them in a tie for fifth place.
The Aggies will continue on the road with their upcoming meet against Boise State on Friday.
Their first home game of the season will be on Feb. 6 against Southern Utah.
