Gymnasts lose to Sacramento State
No. 24 in the country Utah State and No. 33 Sacramento State tumbled into Friday night’s lineup, but only one came out on top. Not Utah State, not this time.
The Aggie gymnasts couldn’t quite pull it off, closing out the meet at 192.175 to Sac State’s 193.750. They counted four falls on beam and bars.
“We didn’t know much about Sac State, well, now we do,” said head coach Ray Corn. “We all feel very gutted now [and] very dissappointed, not at the loss to Sac State, but at the appearance of an untrained team.”
He said that they had vaulted the best, but that the faulter on bars and beam really cost them.
The Aggies started the night on the vault where they recieved their highest score of 48.600. Jessica Parenti led the way for the team with a 9.800 followed closely by Meagan Lewis with a season high of 9.775. With a career high was Nicki Felley at 9.600.
The team fell on the uneven bars. Literally. They counted one fall and a teammate who stopped mid-routine.
High scorers included Parenti, again, with a season high of 9.85 with a wel- executed routine. Alex Martin and Racheal Mandy also had season highs. The team ended with a 47.375.
One problem the team suffered was with injuries, which forced some gymnasts to go in. Parenti said that exprience could have been the problem.
“We didn’t have depth. People go in who have to go in,” she said. “Prepared or not, ready or not, want to or not – that’s who’s going.”
Beam didn’t seem much better as the Aggies counted three falls. Lewis and Parenti led the pack once again. Lewis, with yet another season high of 9.825, and Parenti with a 9.850.
The team rounded out the meet on the floor. Martin and Lewis were the top scores for the team at 9.800, a season high for Martin. Brittany Price managed a career high of 9.675.
Utah State will take on Southern Utah next week at Cedar City. Southern Utah is ranked 22nd. The Aggies are looking to beat Southern Utah this time around.
