Gynmastics team hopes to rebound in California

By Julie Ann Groshans The Utah State gymnastics team will take to the road as it competes in a quad-meet Sunday afternoon. The meet will feature the University of California Berkeley (20), the University of Oklahoma (13) and the University of Arizona.

Currently ranked 20th in the nation, the Cal-Berkeley Golden Bears

opened the season with a 191.650 score, finishing fourth at a quad-meet featuring the University of Denver, the University of Washington and the University of Maryland.

Prior to the quad-meet, the Golden Bears will compete at San Jose State University on Friday.

The Aggies are 4-2 all-time against Cal-Berkeley, coming out on top

192.950-180.425 during the 1999 season at home.

The 13th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners, under the direction of former Olympic coach Steve Nunno and co-head coach Becky Switzer, the team came away with a 194.025-189.300 win over Texas Women’s University. The Sooners swept the top three spots in every event except the floor exercise where they took first and second.

USU is 8-10 all-time vs.Oklahoma. The Aggies haven’t taken on the Sooners since 1998 when they met at the NCAA Regionals. OU scored a 193.125 compared to the Aggies, 191.175.

The Aggies are 10-21 all-time against the Arizona Wildcats, with their last meeting being at the 1998 Midwest Regionals. At that meet, Arizona came out on top 194.750-191.175.

Following the quad-meet, the Aggies will come home to open their 2001 season at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum hosting Boise State. This will be the second meeting of the season between the two teams. During the season-opener, the Broncos came away with a 192.225-188.800 victory.

USU goes into the quad meet led by sophomore Kristen Bloom, who posted a 39.715 in the all-around against the Broncos. She posted a score of 9.825 on the beam and 9.525 on the floor.
