“Heartbreakers’: Perpare for disaster

Bryce Casselman

Watching “Heartbreakers”the new comedy about a pair of con artists starring Sigourney Weaver (Max Conners) and Jennifer Love Hewitt (Page Conners) was like watching a remake of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” in push-up bras, missing the genius of Steve Martin to pull the trite plot out of the garbage.

Weaver and Hewitt play an attractive mother and daughter team that uses male desire to fall in love with them and then catch them with their pants down after marriage for a hefty divorce settlement.

The plot is haunted by predictable turns and bad acting by the two leading ladies, but is pulled out of the toilet by an extremely hilarious performance by Gene Hackman who plays a Palm Beach billionaire (William B. Tensy) who has been targeted by the women for a final scam.

Another bright spot in the film is Ray Liotta (Dean Cumanno) who is scammed by the mother-daughter team at the beginning of the film only to find out the truth later.

Liotta’s acting is very funny and again picks up a plot that drags on for what seems like an eternity.

Hewitt is beautiful, but much like trying to watch a Jennifer Anniston movie, there’s only so far the cute smile and some cleavage can take a film.

Other strong performances came from a couple of cameos from ex-Saturday Night Livers Nora Dunn and Kevin Nealon and also a short spot by Carrie Fisher.

Jason Lee, who brought a settling presence to the film, playing a normal guy who falls in love with a beautiful girl, plays the love interest for Hewitt in this film.

“Heartbreaker” has its moments, but not enough for me to try and con anyone into wasting their money on it.
