How do you want to be viewed historically?
I am writing in response to Doug Chambers’s “Acceptance of Perversion is Wrong” article featured in Friday’s Statesman.Gay Marriage will continue to be the topic of heated debate for a while to come. Movements do not happen overnight, as we have seen with the Women’s and Civil Rights movements. As with those human rights movements, individuals who were opposed to the cause are now viewed with extreme negativity. In reading the article, I kept thinking that the words, “blacks” or “women” could easily fit into certain sentences and make perfect reference to past articles in another time in history. People who would not share a water fountain with an African-American or thought that a woman should not be allowed to have an education may have regretted their lack of compassion as times changed. This is the same argument that has been going on for decades. The names and times have only changed. However, nothing worth changing is ever easy. When the issue is especially tough the victory is even more exemplified. If we can learn anything from past trials it is that. We obviously have not learned the most important lesson of all- to be human.
